What is ISO ?
ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization, which is the world’s largest developer of International Standards. Implementation of these International standards help to make the industry effective and efficient.
ISO is based in Geneva, Switzerland which is the Headquarters. Presently ISO has about 162 member countries who are actually the national standards bodies around the world.
What is ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 is an International standard that provides the requirements for establishment, implementation, maintenance and continual improvement of a quality management system.
What is Quality Management System ?
A Quality Management System (QMS) is a collective system of various business processes aimed at the achievement of quality policy and quality objectives to meet customer requirements and achieve Customer satisfaction. Quality Management includes the organizational structure, policies, procedures, processes and resources required in order to implement quality management.
Quality Management comprises of the

- quality system and Standard operating procedures,
- Product / Service realization and support processes and resources
- necessary to implement quality management.
ISO 9000 refers to a family of standards that focuses on quality management system. On the other hand ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 family which is the only auditable standard in the family that specifies the requirements of a Quality Management System (QMS).
Who can get certified for ISO 9001 ?
This is a common ISO 9001 faq. Any Organization whether Governmental or Non-Governmental / Private of any industry vertical irrespective of the size of their Organizations can get certified for ISO 9001.
Which is the latest version of ISO 9001 ?
The latest version of ISO 9001 is ISO 9001:2015, which was published by ISO in September 2015.

ISO 9001 certificate is valid for how many years ?
Upon successful completion of the ISO documentation audit and ISO Implementation audit, the certification body issues the ISO 9001 certificate for 3 years. After certification, there will be a surveillance audit each at the end of the first and second years. The next year will be the Re-certification audit.
We are only two people in our organization. Can we get ISO 9001 certified?
Yes. ISO 9001 Certification can be obtained irrespective of the size of an organization starting from 2 to thousands of people. Let your industry be a tiny, micro, small scale, medium scale, large scale or a very large scale. The same ISO 9001 clauses apply.The only difference is that for an organization of lesser size, the implementation can be quicker and easier than that of a large sized organization.
What will be the costs involved?
There is a cost of Initial Certification that needs to be paid before Certification Audits. Once successfully certified, there will be a surveillance audit costs at the end of first and second years each respectively. This is followed by re-certification cost for the third year.
Our Organization is already certified to ISO 9001:2008.What should we do?
You will have to transit your quality management system from ISO 9001:2008 to the new ISO 9001:2015 and seek certification to it. However, you will be given a three-year transition period from September 2015 to move to the 2015 version. This implies that, after the end of September 2018, a ISO 9001:2008 certificate will not be valid any more.
